Associate of Applied Science in Nursing

The two-year associate's degree program in nursing combines coursework and clinical experience to prepare you for licensure as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) as you earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. It can also qualify you for admission to our bachelor's degree program in nursing, in which you can earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) with an additional two years of study.

OU-Zanesville's A.A.S program in nursing has an established reputation for graduating well prepared nurses. Graduates work in a variety of settings, including nursing homes, home health agencies as well as clinics, doctor's offices, and hospitals.

The program is fully approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League of Nursing. After graduation, you are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for R.N. licensure.

Admission Information

Individuals interested in the Associate Degree Nursing Program must meet selective criteria. Once the criteria has been met and the individual has indicated the quarter the selection committee should review their file, the file is reviewed after the deadline date for review (see below). The Zanesville Campus admits three time per year; the fall, winter and the spring quarters. Students will be considered for admission after the deadline date until the maximum number is admitted. Qualified applicants will then be placed on a waiting list.

Application Process - Admission to Ohio University:

  1. Complete the application form; pay the nonrefundable $20 fee.
  2. Submit official high school transcript or copy of GED scores.
  3. Submit official transcripts for all previous college courses.
  4. ACT College Entrance Examination (required for students entering Ohio University directly out of high school). Those who have been out of high school for more than a full calendar year are exempt from taking the ACT or SAT.

Admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Program

  • University Placement exams (COMPASS). “Scores” of Tier I Quantitative, English 151, and reading level of at least 80 are expected. A student may have an opportunity to repeat the exam once. Review courses in English, mathematics and/or reading may be necessary if scores fall below these standards. This exam is administered on the Zanesville campus by appointment in the Learning Advancement Center . Please call 588-1510 to set up an appointment.
  • The applicant must be a high school graduate or hold a certificate of High School Equivalency (GED). A high school graduate must have a grade point average of 3.0 out of a 4.0 scale.
  • If the applicant is a transfer or current OU student, they must have an established college grade point average of 2.75 or better out of a 4.0 scale is expected.
  • The applicant must have completed courses in algebra, biology and chemistry with a grade of “C” or better at the high school or college level.
  • The applicant must submit a “Statement of Education and Career Goals” (typed - no more than 500 words).

In addition to the requirements listed on the Admissions page, applicants to the nursing program must also complete the admission requirements to the Nursing program.

Application Deadline:
Admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Program at the Zanesville campus is during the fall, winter and spring quarters. The deadline for admission to be eligible for first round selection is below. Applicants that do not meet these deadline dates may still be considered for admission if the maximum number of students has not been admitted.

Fall Quarter Admission - April 1 (Chillicothe, Southern, Zanesville)
Winter Quarter Admission - September 1 (Zanesville only)
Spring Quarter Admission - December 1 (Chillicothe, Zanesville)

Advanced Placement For Licensed Practical Nurses
Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN's) can receive credit for the first three quarters of nursing by successfully graduating from an approved school of practical nursing and meeting licensure requirements.  In addition, the LPN must successfully complete with a grade of "C" or better, a five credit hour transition course and a three credit hour bridge course designed to prepare the LPN to enter the second year of the Associate Degree Nursing Program.  These courses must be completed no sooner than one year prior to admission to the second year of the nursing program.  Also, in order to begin the second year nursing classes, the LPN must complete the following support courses; Bios 130, Bios 131, Bios 201, Chem 121 and Hcfn 128 or transfer acceptable credit to Ohio University.

Advanced placement LPN's also have the option of receiving credit for Maternity, Newborn, Women's Health Alterations (Nurs 220) and Child and Adolescent Health Alterations (Nurs 240) by successfully completing the following exam offered by Excelsior College Examinations.

More about the Excelsior Examinations...
The examinations are computer-driven and are administered at the Prometric ® Testing Centers (formerly Sylvan ® Technology Centers).  These exams are designed to be as user-friendly as possible and require little or no previous computer experience.  On-screen directions are available.

The exams are available up to 12 hours a day, six days a week (including Saturday).  Approximately two weeks after applying to take the tests, you will be sent an authorization to test letter.  You will generally have 90 days during which you may take the test.

The Nursing Program at Ohio University - Zanesville enjoys an established reputation for graduating well-prepared, high quality nurses. In addition to classes at the University, nursing students participate in clinical experiences at Genesis Health Care (Bethesda and Good Samaritan hospitals), Fairfield Medical Center, Southeast Ohio Regional Medical Center, and a number of selected agencies throughout Muskingum County.

Ohio University - Zanesville is one of five regional campuses of the Ohio University offering predominately the first two years of general studies as well as eight baccalaureate and several master's degrees. The campus lies in a rural setting in the city of Zanesville with a population of 28,000 and a service district of 180,000. A total of 1,350 students commute to the 179-acre site one hour east of Columbus and two hours west of Pittsburgh.
