Associate of Applied Science in Nursing

The two-year associate's degree program in nursing combines coursework and clinical experience to prepare you for licensure as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) as you earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. It can also qualify you for admission to our bachelor's degree program in nursing, in which you can earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) with an additional two years of study.

OU-Zanesville's A.A.S program in nursing has an established reputation for graduating well prepared nurses. Graduates work in a variety of settings, including nursing homes, home health agencies as well as clinics, doctor's offices, and hospitals.

The program is fully approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League of Nursing. After graduation, you are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for R.N. licensure.

Admission Information

Admission Information
Individuals interested in the Associate Degree Nursing Program must meet  selection criteria in order to be eligible for review.  Once a student has met all of the criteria, they must complete a postcard with the Office of Nursing and indicate which quarter they wish their file to be presented to the selection committee (the deadlines for each quarter selection is indicated below).  The Zanesville campus will admit a select number of students to the program each quarter.  Admission into the nursing program at Ohio University Zanesville does not guarantee admission into programs on the Chillicothe or Southern campuses.  Each campus conducts its own selection process.

Admission to Ohio University:

  1. Complete the application form; pay the nonrefundable $20 fee.
  2. Submit official high school transcript (must be mailed from institution) or copy of GED scores.
  3. Submit official transcripts for all previous college courses (must be mailed from institution).
  4. High school students must submit ACT College Entrance Examination. Those who have been out of high school  for more than a full calendar year are exempt from taking the ACT or SAT.
  5. Take the University Placement exams (COMPASS) as required for all incoming freshman. Students not at Tier I Math, English 151, and reading level of at least 80 may need to complete additional course work.  The exams may be required for transfer students without Math 113 or English 151 credit.  To schedule the exam on the Zanesville campus, call the Learning Advancement Center at (740) 588-1510. 

Section Criteria of Associate Degree Nursing Program

  1. The applicant must be a high school graduate or hold a certificate of High School Equivalency (GED).  A high school graduate must have a grade point average of 3.0 out of a 4.0 scale.
  2. If the applicant is a transfer or current OU student, they must have an established college grade point average of 2.75 out of a 4.0 scale.  If the student has other college work, a combined GPA will be calculated.
  3. The applicant must have completed courses in algebra, biology and chemistry with a grade of “C” or better at the high school or college level.
  4. The applicant must submit a “Statement of Education and Career Goals”.  The statement should be no more than one page typed or no more than 500 words.
  5. Complete a nursing admissions exam at the applicant’s expense. 

Admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Program is by a competitive and selective process. Admission to Ohio University and meeting the above selection criteria does not guarantee admission to the nursing program.  In addition to the requirements listed on the Admissions page, applicants to the nursing program must also complete the admission requirements to the Nursing program.

Fall Quarter Admission – April 1 (Chillicothe, Southern, Zanesville)
Winter Quarter Admission - September 1 (Chillicothe, Zanesville)
Spring Quarter Admission - December 1 (Chillicothe, Zanesville)

ADVANCE PLACEMENT FOR LICENSES PRACTICAL NURSES

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) can receive credit for the first three quarters of nursing by successfully graduating from an approved school of practical nursing and meeting licensure requirements.  In addition, the LPN must successfully complete with a grade of “C” or better a five credit hour transition course and three credit hour bridge course designed to prepare the LPN to enter the second year of the Associate Degree Nursing Program.  These courses must be completed no sooner than one year prior to admission to the second year of the nursing program.  Also, in order to begin the second year nursing classes, the LPN must complete the following support courses; BIOS 130, BIOS 131, BIOS 201, CHEM 121, PSY 101 or transfer acceptable credit to Ohio University.

Advanced placement LPNs also have the option of receiving credit for Maternity- Newborn Nursing: AND (NURS 216) and Child-Adolescent Nursing: AND (NURS 217) by successfully completing the following exam offered by Excelsior College Examinations:  Maternal & Child Nursing (#453).

More about the Excelsior Examinations...
The examinations are computer-driven and are administered at the Prometric ® Testing Centers (formerly Sylvan ® Technology Centers).  These exams are designed to be as user-friendly as possible and require little or no previous computer experience.  On-screen directions are available.

The exams are available up to 12 hours a day, six days a week (including Saturday).  Approximately two weeks after applying to take the tests, you will be sent an authorization to test letter.  You will generally have 90 days during which you may take the test.

Coursework

In addition to nursing courses, the program's curriculum includes coursework in anatomy and physiology, chemistry, nutrition, microbiology, psychology, sociology, English, and quantitative skills.

Department of Nursing

The Nursing Program at Ohio University - Zanesville enjoys an established reputation for graduating well-prepared, high quality nurses. In addition to classes at the University, nursing students participate in clinical experiences at Genesis Health Care (Bethesda and Good Samaritan hospitals), Fairfield Medical Center, Southeast Ohio Regional Medical Center, and a number of selected agencies throughout Muskingum County.

Ohio University - Zanesville is one of five regional campuses of the Ohio University offering predominately the first two years of general studies as well as eight baccalaureate and several master's degrees. The campus lies in a rural setting in the city of Zanesville with a population of 28,000 and a service district of 180,000. A total of 1,350 students commute to the 179-acre site one hour east of Columbus and two hours west of Pittsburgh.
