TOPOGRAPHIC MAP EXERCISES - Hog Island Quadrangle
Quadrangle Name: HOG ISLAND, VIRGINIA
Physiographic Region: COASTAL PLAIN
This map is located on the Coastal Plain. Like many other islands (there is
another Hog Island off of Virginia's Eastern Shore) it gets its name from the days when
early settlers turned animals loose on the island so they didn't have to fence them in.
- Is Hog Island still an island? What is its land use?
- Can you name two military areas on this map?
- What are two names of ship channels on the map? Can you find a shipwreck?
- What two major colonial Virginia historic sites are on or near this map?
- What large technological feature can you find? Knowing that this feature generates a lot
of heat and has to be cooled, how do you think is it cooled?
- About how wide is the James River at the bend near Hog Island due north from Hog Point?
- Note that each topographic map, or quadrangle, includes an inset map of Virginia with a
black square showing its location. Find this on the bottom margin of the map. The black
square is exaggerated in size because it takes about 600 topographic maps to cover all of
Virginia. Where is the Hog Island quadrangle located?
- What visible feature crosses the James in a southwest to northeast direction on the
eastern edge of the map?
