Illustrations in this volume are by Dan Seidensticker, formerly a 
graduate research assistant in the Masters program in Geographic and 
Cartographic Sciences at George Mason University. Thanks are also due to 
Karen Pirhalla who typed many drafts of this manuscript since its initial 
version presented to the Annual Meeting of the AAG in 1984, and to Helen 
Rusnak and Mary Blackwell for their assistance with the final copy.
