Ohio University-Zanesville professor contributes to international research

Dr. Mohannad Al-Saghir, assistant professor of biological sciences at Ohio University-Zanesville, has published in the 2007 International Journal of Botany.  His work entitled “Genetic Diversity in Hordeum spontaneum C. Koch of Northern Jordan (Ajloun Area) as Revealed by RAPD and AFLP Markers,” contributes to research and scientific methodologies in the field of agricultural molecular science.  Al-Saghir collected wild barley samples from northern Jordan, determined the molecular diversity, and analyzed DNA through the use of different scientific methodologies and evaluated the methods to improve the technique and validity of results.  As a result of his research and scholarship for this publication, Al-Saghir has been sought out as advisor to four international Ph.D. students from Egypt, Sri Lanka, and China.

Al-Saghir is also active in several other projects including Building a Model for Wildlife Conservation and Protection of Ohio Local Flora in the Collegial Woods walking trail and Risk Awareness for Disease and Undergraduate Study (RADIUS).  Both of these projects engage college students in undergraduate research projects, giving them hands-on, real-life application to their college education.
