Political
Science faculty advocates for voting
Politics is a hot topic with the presidential election this year. Assistant Professor of Political Science, Jared Farley, is working to get people excited about their right to vote. Farley will be the featured speaker for the October Third Thursday Event at Ohio University and will be presenting at the Muskingum County Pioneer and Historical Society in November. In addition, he will be presenting at a conference in Boston and will be teaching a course on politics and religion this winter.
His presentation entitled “Everything you ever wanted to know about the Electoral College” will be held on Thursday, October 16, at noon, in the Elson Hall Auditorium. Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public.
On Sunday, November 2, he will discuss possible connections between the 1824, 1876, 2000 and 2008 presidential elections. The topic of discussion will center on the fact that the popular vote winners were not actually elected in the 1824, 1876 and 2000 elections. This, coupled with a discussion of the 2008 candidates, Obama and McCain, promises to make this presentation lively and engaging. The program will be held at 2 p.m. at the Stone Academy on Jefferson Street in the Putnam District.
Farley will head to Boston to present at the 40th annual meeting of the Northeastern Political Science Association He will take part in a roundtable discussion about "Contemporary Threats To Democracy" with scholars from around the country and will present a paper on films that illustrate how an "Imperial Judiciary" is threatening American democracy.
He is also scheduled to moderate a panel discussion on "Religion in the 2008 Presidential Election.” Students who register for Farley’s Religion and American Politics during winter quarter will have the benefit of engaging conversation with an active researcher and national presenter.
