Ohio University-Zanesville Dean publishes book chapter

James W. Fonseca, dean of the Zanesville campus and professor of geography at Ohio University, has published a chapter in Beyond the Metropolis: Urban Geography as if Small Cities Mattered, published by University Press of America and edited by Benjamin Ofori-Amoah.

In the chapter, “Micropolitan Ohio: A Study of the Internal Structure of Small Cities,” Fonseca discusses the implications of a new category defined by the US Census Bureau in the 2000 census. A micropolitan area is a designation that identifies small metropolitan areas. Examples in Ohio include Athens, Cambridge, Chillicothe, and Zanesville. Ohio had 29 such designations in the 2000 census, second only to Texas.

Fonseca, who began his tenure as Zanesville Campus Dean in 1998 remains active in research and scholarship in the field of Geography. For more information on micropolitan Ohio, contact Fonseca at 740.588.1434 or via email at fonseca@ohio.edu.
