Ohio University-Zanesville professor contributes to gene research

Ohio University-Zanesville’s assistant professor of biological sciences, Dr. Tarig Higazi, recently published “Sequences necessary for trans-splicing in transiently transfected Brugia malayi” in the Journal of Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology.

Higazi pioneered a transient transfection system in 2003 with colleagues from the University of Alabama, Birmingham that allowed the study of gene regulation in a parasitic worm that causes Elephantiasis in the tropics. The results of his research resulted in publication of four articles.  Higazi continues to contribute by presenting his current research at the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene conference held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Higazi, who holds a Ph.D in Zoology, joined Ohio University-Zanesville in 2006.  Prior to that he was a Senior Research Associate and Laboratory Manager at the University of Alabama, School of Medicine.
