Ohio University-Zanesville’s Higazi heads to Sudan

Tarig Higazi, assistant professor of biological sciences at Ohio University-Zanesville, is headed to Khartoum, Sudan. He was invited to participate in a needs assessment for Central Health Laboratory for activities associated with eradicating river blindness in Northern Sudan. Higazi will join the efforts of The Carter Center and World Health Organization for the project.

The Carter Center is committed to advancing human rights and alleviating unnecessary human suffering. The Atlanta, Georgia-based Center has helped to improve the quality of life for people in more than 70 countries.

The Carter Center has teamed up with World Health Organization (WHO), the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system, to eliminate river blindness (onchocerciasis) in Northern Sudan.

Higazi, who worked toward his Ph. D. in Abu Hamed, Sudan, has been involved in onchocerciasis research since the early 1990s and has published articles on the subject. He will be accompanied by Professor Charles Mackenzie of Michigan State University, international expert in onchocercias and consultant for The Carter Center, Mectizan Donation Program and the Onchocerciasis Elemination Program for the Americas (OEPA).
