Ohio University-Zanesville was host to 70 mathematicians from Poland, Spain, India, Palestine, Turkey, England, Portugal, Germany, Czech Republic, Scotland, New Zealand, South Korea, Senegal, Canada, Mexico, Vietnam, Italy, Cyprus and France for the International Conference on Rings and Things. The conference was held in honor of Carl Faith and Barbara Osofsky in honor of their 80th and 70th birthdays respectively.

The conference brought together leading researchers to discuss their latest advances in ring theory. "There are an infinite number of theories to be proved," said Osofsky.

"This is probably the largest concentration of people in the area that we work with in the world and its centered in Ohio. The state of Ohio is on the world map in mathematics," she said.

The conference was made possible by support from Ohio University's Center for Ring Theory; the regional campuses in Chillicothe, Lancaster and Zanesville; the University Outreach and Regional Campus office; the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the National Security Agency.

Conference Coordinator, Pramod Kanwar, associate professor of mathematics at the Zanesville campus, said he appreciated the assistance of Viet Dung Nguyen, Franco Guerriero, Lakhdar Hammoudi, and his advisor, SK Jain, of the Center of Ring Theory and its Applications.

"Bringing the conference to Zanesville helps to meet an important goal to change the image of the Zanesville campus and to put it on the international map in scholarly activity," Kanwar said.
