Ohio University-Zanesville Bachelor of Specialized Studies senior, Vickie McDonald of Zanesville, recently participated in the university’s Research and Creativity Fair in Athens. She was among nearly 400 students who presented their research, creative activity or scholarship. Under the direction of Dr. Karen Slovak, assistant professor of Social Work at the Zanesville campus, McDonald engaged in her research as part of her Independent Study Social Work class.
McDonald investigated the need for counseling services for the students at Ohio University-Zanesville. The most significant indication she found is that stress, anxiety and depression are prevalent symptoms among Zanesville campus students.
“The opportunity to work on a one-to-one basis with a student can be a wonderful learning experience for them,” says Slovak. “I think Vickie excelled in this project, which highlights a current need on our campus.”
“I found the poster presentation an added benefit to my coursework,” says McDonald of the experience of competing with students from throughout the University system. “I was nervous, but the judges made it easy to address their questions. I am glad Dr. Slovak encouraged me to participate.”
