Ohio University-Zanesville continues the tradition of a commitment to international education and the inclusion of global perspectives into curricula.  One way this is being done is by welcoming visiting instructors from other countries.

Associate Professor of Spanish Karen Brown gives her students a first hand experience with Spanish dialogue when she invites visiting instructors from Spain into her classroom each year. This year, Manuel Nevot Navarro from Toledo, Spain, is working with Brown’s classes.  “I have enjoyed my time at Ohio University-Zanesville so far and am eager about meeting new people,” said Nevot.

Nevot is fluent in five languages including Italian, Hebrew, French, English, and of course, Spanish.  He has been published in the Galicia Dende Salamanco III for translating a Greek tale written by an Israeli, Asher Barash into the Galician language.  Nevot also had the opportunity to serve with the Spanish Army Staff in 1995 as part of the Red Cross.

Prior to coming to Ohio University-Zanesville, Nevot served as a professor for foreigners in the Estudios Toledonas at the University of Castilla-La Mancha on the Toledo, Spain Campus.  The Estudios Toledonas (ESTO) program has allowed Ohio University-Zanesville students to study abroad in Spain for several years. The ESTO program was started as part of the Toledo, Ohio Toledo, Spain sister-city relationship that has been in effect since 1931.  Dr. Brown’s father-in-law developed the two Toledo relationships and she has been helping maintain the Ohio connection since 1963.

“I appreciate Karen’s initiative in providing such experiences for our students,” says Zanesville Campus Dean Jim Fonseca. “Providing the opportunity to learn other cultures, dialogue, and language first hand enhances the students’ education.”
