New faculty join Ohio University-Zanesville

Zanesville,OH- Ohio University-Zanesville is pleased to announce the appointment of six new faculty to their campus  for the 2004-2005 school year. “We are pleased to expand the offerings for the residents of our service area,” says Jim Fonseca, Dean of the Zanesville campus. “Bringing new faculty to our area enhances our community and provides additional learning opportunities for our students close to home.”  Just this year Ohio University was named by "US News and World Reports" as one of the top fifty public colleges in the nation, so our students right here in Zanesville benefit from that same prestige just as if they were in Athens.”

Karen Slovak joins the University as Assistant Professor of Social Work. She earned her B.A. in Psychology form Bowling Green and her two graduate degrees, Masters in Social Science Administration and Ph.D. in Social Welfare, from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Slovak has ten publications and several professional presentations, many of them related to violence and children in rural areas.  Slovak is a licensed social worker and an Ohio certified prevention specialist.

Stacie Sweet has accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Nursing. She earned her associate’s degree from Ohio University-Zanesville and her B.S.N. from Athens.  She earned her master’s in nursing from The Ohio State University.  A certified women’s health nurse practitioner, Sweet has held positions at Mayfair Village in Columbus and at the Coshocton Health and Rehabilitation Center.  She is also affiliated with Prime Care of Southeastern Ohio.

Paul Heddaeus has joined the university faculty in Industrial Technology.  Paul holds his M.S. in Engineering Management from Ohio University and his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Penn State. Heddaeus has worked for Graham Packaging, an internal subcontractor at the Colgate-Palmolive plant in Guernsey County.  In addition to teaching Heddaeus will also be developing the B.S. in Industrial Technology program.

Kitty Consolo accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Health Sciences. Consolo holds her B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. from Wake Forest in Exercise Science with a dissertation focused on exercise and blood pressure.  Dr. Consolo is an accomplished runner, having won more than 300 races and qualifying for the 1984 Olympic trials.  She was appointed by the Governor to a three-year term on the Ohio Governor’s Physical Fitness and Sports Advisory Board along with being a medical advice columnist for Runner’s World Magazine.

Devereaux Poling has accepted the position as Assistant Professor of Psychology.  Dr Poling. earned her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in psychology from the University of Toledo. ”Are Dinosaurs the Rule or the Exception: Concepts of Death and Extinction,” was the topic of her dissertation.

Li Zhou joins the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education. Zhou earned her B.A. in English from Sichuan Foreign Language Institute in China and her M.A. in teaching English as a Second Language as well as her Ed.D. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Her dissertation entitled, “The Influence of Learning Theories on Research about Computer Technology Applications in Elementary Classrooms” is one of several areas of interest for Dr. Zhou. For several years Li was involved in the giant panda breeding project, including the National Geographic Video “Save the Panda.”

Ohio University-Zanesville’s response to the community’s needs is evidenced by the 35% increase in enrollment from five years ago. Dr. Slovak and Mr. Heddaeus will enable the University to expand course offerings in social work and in industrial technology, respectively. With the addition of Sweet and Zhou, Ohio University-Zanesville is prepared to better address the demand for qualified and certified nurses and early childhood education providers.

Ohio University-Zanesville is positioning itself to provide even more degree completion at the Zanesville campus. With Dr. Poling joining the Psychology Department faculty, the campus hopes to provide three years of the psychology major. This expanded program offering is in addition to the nine bachelors and two associate degrees currently offered at Ohio University-Zanesville.
