The exhibit focuses on a series of installation sculptures designed to evoke a reflective state and to enlarge one’s perspective of human mortality. The art exhibit features “Requiem for Whispered Voices” a piece of music Westgerdes commissioned for the show by Ohio University-Zanesville Music Instructor Charles Savage. Other literary references complete the exhibit to make it multi-artistic in presentation.
“By opening up this subject to artistic exploration and expression, the exhibit provides a liberating balance to the repression and denial of death frequently encountered today,” explains Westgerdes. “My intent of this exhibit is to provide visitors to the Art Center with art works that will engage them mentally and emotionally, moving them to a wider awareness of the many dimensions within the final passage.”
Working two years on the commissioned piece of music for the show, Savage enlisted the help of local performers Bob and Laura Skidmore to record the final piece for the art show. “The concept when listening to the piece is to set a reflective tone when you approach the art work,” explains Savage. “I want the deep nature of Jerry’s art to reach each person and to be remembered by the enhancement of the music.”
The show continues until March 1, 2006. The Zanesville Art Center is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10:00am-5:00pm, Thursday 10:00am-8:30pm and Saturday & Sunday 1:00pm-5:00pm. For more information on the exhibit click on Zanesville Art Center Galleries & Exhibitions.
