Each year Ohio Magazine celebrates the outstanding achievements of educators from around the state with the presentation of Excellence in Education Awards. Those selected for inclusion are nominated by institution personnel based on the individual’s teaching experience, participation in professional development and extracurricular activities, interest in students outside the classroom and distinctive qualities as community members.
For 2006, Ohio University-Zanesville submitted and had accepted for inclusion in Ohio Magazine’s annual publication, Dr. Donna L. Clevinger, associate dean and associate professor of theatre; Dr. Hannah Nissen, associate professor of early childhood education; Charles Savage, instructor of music; and Gerald Westgerdes, professor of art.
Clevinger was nominated for her passion for capitalizing on resources within the region and throughout the state to provide the most dynamic learning experience for undergraduate students. Nissen’s initiative in research and classroom experience for her students, along with national conference presentation, publication and the local Jumpstart college student and preschool student mentoring program, were reasons for her nomination.
Savage was recognized for engaging students in his classes and active involvement in the community. Westgerdes’ nationally-renown multi-media artist status and leadership in art professions and teaching garnered him a spot among the 150 faculty members from around the state who were recognized.
Ohio University-Zanesville serves students from Muskingum, Guernsey, Morgan, Noble and Perry counties with a diverse faculty and offering of 10 bachelor’s, 5 associate degree and several rotating master’s degree programs.
